Those in receipt of Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program can sigh a bit of relief if they are from the seven bands under the Williams Treaty Settlement Fund.
In and email sent, Kristen Tedsco, Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) stated treaty payments are exempt and are not subject to claims on the application or follow-up.
“Their social assistance eligibility and payment amounts from ODSP would not be impacted,” read in the email. According to Tedsco, any assets clients gain through the Williams Treaty Settlement fund is also exempt.
In 2012, three First Nations, Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Mississagua’s of Scugog Island and Alderville settled a 71 million Island of the Trent land claim where OW and ODSP clients were exempt, but clients were given one year to extinguish the funds and have no assets from the land claim.
